The mother of two children who nearly drowned in a backyard swimming pool Tuesday evening in Cañon City is being charged with child abuse and drug use and possession. Four children, ages 1, 2, 4 and another whose age is not known, were taken into protective custody by the Department of Human Services Wednesday, said Cañon City Police Capt. Allen Cooper. Nina Marie Davis, 23, was in the shower at her Cañon City home when two of her children, and one of her boyfriend's children, were pulled from a swimming pool. Richard Valdez, 18, told police he was working in the front yard when he heard a child screaming. According to police, Valdez ran to the backyard and found 4-year-old Ashton Davis clinging to the side of the above-ground pool. Two other children, Raque Valdez, 1, and Ezra Davis, 2, were in the pool, unmoving, and had turned blue.
