Vulnerable indigenous families in Gippslands Wellington Shire will benefit from a new $1,684,000 Bracks Government child abuse and neglect prevention project, the Minister for Children, Sherryl Garbutt, said today. During a visit to the region, Ms Garbutt said the Bracks Government would provide the funding over four years to set up a Family Support Innovation Project. This project will provide greater support to families under pressure and should reduce child protection notification rates, Ms Garbutt said. Families will now receive earlier, more intensive welfare support to address their problems before they escalate and require child protection involvement. Family Support Innovation Projects have been operating in Victoria since 2002 and have contributed to this State defying increasing child protection notification rates across the nation.
